Keep your RUC topped up. We issue vouchers as you need them, redeem them with NZTA on your behalf, and spread the cost across your regular payments.
If you drive a diesel, electric, or plug-in hybrid vehicle in New Zealand, you pay Road User Charges (RUC) by the kilometre. Your RUC label sits next to your rego on the windscreen, facing outwards from where you're sitting. It shows the max odometer reading your current RUC covers you up to. Roll past that number, and you're on the wrong side of the law.
Movogo takes care of it. At signup we record your current RUC ending km and today's odometer, and you tell us roughly how many kms you drive each year. You pick how much RUC you want redeemed at a time (any number of 1,000 km units) and a buffer for extra headroom. Then we project forwards, issue vouchers as they're needed, and redeem them with NZ Transport Agency on your behalf. NZTA posts your updated RUC label directly to you.
Because the RUC label is even easier to forget than your rego. It's on the far side of the windscreen, facing the other way. Movogo watches it for you.

Movogo issues your RUC vouchers and redeems them with NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) on your behalf. NZTA posts the updated RUC label directly to you. You never need to log in to the NZTA portal or queue at the Post Office.
Right now, diesel vehicles, full electric vehicles (EVs), and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in New Zealand pay RUC. Petrol and petrol-hybrid vehicles pay their road contribution through fuel excise tax at the pump. The government plans to move all vehicles (including petrol) onto RUC in future. When that happens, Movogo will be ready.
A reasonable guess is fine. If you're unsure, err on the generous side or set a larger buffer, just to make sure you're always covered. The whole system is designed to self-correct: if you're driving more than expected we'll top up sooner and your regular amount adjusts, and the reverse if you're driving less. We revisit your numbers whenever we get a fresh odometer reading (at WOF, or any time you send us one), so things stay accurate over time.
The buffer is how much RUC headroom you want before we top up. If you set a 500 km buffer, we redeem your next voucher when your remaining RUC hits that threshold. A higher buffer means less chance of cutting it fine, but a larger balance against your plan at any given time.
Three things affect it: your vehicle (RUC rates vary by vehicle class and weight), how many 1,000 km units you redeem at a time (more units means bigger amounts to collect between top-ups), and how far you drive (more kms means more RUC needed). We set an indicative weekly amount at signup and refine it as your actual usage becomes clearer.
We adjust. If you're driving more, your next top-up comes sooner and your contribution goes up. If you're driving less, the opposite. You can also send us a fresh odometer reading anytime and we'll recalibrate straight away. An in-app odometer update is on the roadmap.
Yes. You can pick any number of 1,000 km units per top-up. Fewer units mean more frequent top-ups with smaller amounts to collect in between. More units mean fewer top-ups with bigger contributions in the lead-up to each one. Let us know if you want to change and we'll update your plan.
Any remaining RUC on the car transfers with it to the new owner. Let us know and we can carry any unused contribution across to your next car, or you can cancel your plan.
